Thirteen-year-old Megan Hutchison isn't your average modern-day teenager — she has more on her mind than school, boys and peer pressure, and she's dealt with more in her young teenage life than most will throughout their entire lives. She was born with cystic fibrosis.
Popular vacation haven company, Southern Vacation Rentals, prides themselves not only in their work but also in their philanthropy. With a vision to be known as "the most caring vacation rental company," Southern Vacation Rentals has been honored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) for its continued dedication.
Hutchison presented the large glass flower painting to Southern Vacation Rentals owners Mike Shoults, wife Nancy and daughter Erin. The painting was donated by Mary Hong, local artist and owner of Wired Glass Studio in Destin.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that typically presents itself early in life — during infancy or childhood. Attacking the body, cystic fibrosis most critically affects the lungs, but because the disease is defined by the abnormal transport of sodium and chloride, the liver, pancreas and intestines can also be damaged.
Southern Vacation Rentals has been part of the fight against cystic fibrosis for many years and in countless different avenues, including the CFF's largest national fundraising event, The Great Strides Walk.
All around the country, more than 250,000 people come together annually with the common goal of finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.
Great Strides Destin kicks off on Feb. 28 at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon at Bonefish Grill in Destin. CFF members will share stories about local donors and the fight for a cure.
To attend Thursday's luncheon, contact the event's co-chair Laurie Hutchison at email@example.com.
The Great Strides Walk in Destin takes place on April 20, starting at Village Baptist Church.
