DeFuniak Springs police investigate carjacking

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — Two men reported that they were victims of a carjacking at the corner of S. Park Street and Railroad Avenue about 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

The men were in a red Jeep SUV when a green Chevrolet pick-up truck pulled up, according to a news release from the DeFuniak Springs police department.

Four white men got out of the truck and started smashing out the windows of the SUV with a sledge hammer while the two men were inside, the release said.

The men said they tried to fend off the attack with a baseball bat, according to the release.

One of the suspects got inside the SUV and drove a short distance before crashing into a tree, the release said.

The four suspects fled in the truck and were located later in Okaloosa County.

No arrests had been made by 2:45 p.m., said Capt. Mike Lolley, of the DeFuniak Springs police department.

"We are still in the early stages of investigating," he said.
