Teen steals more than $120 in surf shop merchandise

DESTIN — A Tennessee teen was caught shoplifting on March 8. The 19-year-old took two pairs of board shorts and a t-shirt from the Maui Max Surf Shop on Legendary Drive, according to an arrest report from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen was caught after he exited the dressing room with only three of the seven items he brought into it. When an employee asked him where the rest of the items were, the teen denied ever having seven items. He told the employee he had only brought in four items, the report said.

The teen set off the alarms when he tried to exit the store. A store employee and security officer asked the teen if he had any items on him. He told them he had a pair of board shorts. The store recovered a pair of Black Fox board shorts and a pair of Hurley Board Shorts valued at $49.50 each from the teen. He also had a Black Fox t-shirt, valued at $20, for a total of $119.

The teen confessed to shoplifting and was charged with petit larceny.

In the process of stealing the items, he tried to remove three sensors. The teen was charged with damage to property (criminal mischief) for damaging the sensors. He is due in court April 6.
