CONSTRUCTION: Workers put the finishing touches on the new IMAX Theater. The curved screen and the unique geometry of the theater meant the auditorium had to be modified. “The screen is actually closer to the audience,” Devine told The Log. “We lose seating ensuring that every seat has a good vantage point.”

IMAXING IT OUT: Rave theater set to open mega-movie experience on Feb. 4th

The curtain will rise on the new IMAX Theater at Rave Motion Pictures in Destin Commons on Feb. 4th.

The reveal of the new theater was originally scheduled for Nov. 19 for the much-anticipated movie, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” However, construction was set back for the Destin location due to not having enough internal construction department resources to open six IMAX theaters at once.

“We had to pare it down to five for Harry Potter,” according to Jeremy Devine, vice president of marketing for Rave Motion Pictures.

The new IMAX Theater will be exciting for locals and tourists, according to Devine, who said Destin is a great location.

“The digital IMAX being installed has 2D and 3D capability,” said Devine. “The enhanced projection provides higher image quality.”

Using two projectors and laser-aligned enhanced audio, the movie envelops its audience in “big sound and sight.”

The curved screen and the unique geometry of the theater meant the auditorium had to be modified.

“The screen is actually closer to the audience,” Devine told The Log. “We lose seating ensuring that every seat has a good vantage point.”

“There will be a steady flow of movies throughout the spring and summer” that will tap into the technology, said Devine. “This will lead up to the release of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.’ ”

Some upcoming IMAX films that will be shown at the Rave Motion Pictures also include Disney movies “Mars Needs Moms” and “Cars 2.”

The first movie playing in the new theater will be a 3D action-thriller by James Cameron called “Sanctum.” The R-rated film is about a team of underwater cave divers and their journey.

According to Devine, Rave will generally show movies in both IMAX and regular theaters if screens are available. Tickets have yet to go on sale, but they will cost more than regular ticket prices.

“Seeing a movie at the IMAX Theater is so immersive,” Devine said. “It’s a dynamite experience.”
