Re: Letter, Aug. 17, “Faith groups and the SLPC”
All of the groups listed in the author’s letter, Family Research Council, American Family Association, Family research Institute, Catholic Family News, Liberty Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom, have commonality which the Southern Poverty Law Center opposes:
Oppose same sex marriage (denies same sex couples civil liberties); oppose freedom of choice by a woman and her doctors (denies freedom of women reproductive rights); dumps AIDS, homosexuality, and drug abuse into one lump of sin (hardly an expression of freedom and equality for all); sanctity of life (hidden language for forcible childbearing taking freedom of choice away from women). Their bigotry and hate hides behind Christian wholesome names that misrepresent their intent.
Living out our faith is a life of providing mercy, understanding, compassion, and support for those of us who experience trials of life, abuse, and, yes, often those of us who make bad choices.
All of the organizations mentioned in the author’s list have committed acts that do not represent the lessons of love and grace and forgiveness that Jesus brought to us. That is why they are listed by the SPLC as hate groups along with KKK, Nazis, Black Panthers, etc. Black Lives Matter came about because of hate crimes such as Ferguson and Trayvon Martin, where young black men were murdered and no justice was served in response. They have a right to feel oppressed and angry.
We do need to speak out as Christians to condemn all acts of violence, oppression and hate. Staying silent is condoning by omission. May God grant us all grace and mercy for we have all failed.
