MAYOR SAM SEEVERS

COLUMN: Rodeo, Seafood Fest keeps history and heritage alive

We are fast approaching my favorite time of year, fall in Destin! Not only does fall bring cool breezes, it also brings many festivals and special events. Two of which are historic events, the annual Destin Seafood Festival and the annual Destin Fishing Rodeo.

This year the festival begins September 30 down on Destin Harbor, but with a twist. The festival will be a linear event extending a half-mile along the docks from HarborWalk Village all the way to the famous Boathouse Oyster Bar.

The Destin Charter Boat Association is running this year’s festival with the purpose of bringing the community together to embrace our “Heritage on the Harbor” and showcase the docks and the fishermen that Destin takes such pride in. The committee has worked for months to bring us all something very special and I cannot wait to enjoy this event as I have for more than 30 years.

The Destin Seafood Festival will kick off the historic Destin Fishing Rodeo, and we can all look forward to some new additions to this amazing month-long event hosted by AJ’s. For more than six decades, locals and visitors alike have enjoyed these festivities on the docks in Destin.

The rodeo has emerged as one of the most anticipated events in Northwest Florida, and it brings in fishermen from all over the country as well as the “best of the best,” the Destin Fishing Fleet. There is nothing like the excitement of watching the fish being weighed in by weighmaster and commentator Bruce Cheves under the watchful eye of Miss Destin.

These two wonderful events bring such excitement to Destin along with enjoyment for the whole family. It takes many dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors to make them successful.

I would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers and event organizers for all of their hard work. Please know that the time you spend is greatly appreciated by the thousands of people who attend every year. We are blessed to have all of you keeping the history and heritage of Destin alive.

Sam Seevers is mayor of Destin.
