Overheard on The Web

Here is what some people are saying online about stories in the Destin Log.

Breaking Destin Campground — By: militarydawg
Excuse my lack of sympathy for these people (except the child/children involved). You pay in the present for choices made in the past. Life’s hard. Deal with it and move on.

Isn’t that why trailers have wheels, so they can be mobile?

By: navyguy
Like everybody else. All they have to do is lie.

By: gunkaroni
Sitting around drinking Jim Beam in the middle of the day , while his wife is out making whatever occasional money they bring in? Then “Steve” blames the lack of jobs and affordable housing in DESTIN? Hello, I have a great job, and I can’t afford to live in Destin. It is a giant tourist trap! On the beach. Cry me a river. There are plenty of parks in central and south Florida. I suggest you use all that money you all saved with the fixed rent and air up your tires and MOVE, just like anybody else has to...

Campground’s loss may split up local couple — By: navyguy
Oh, how sweet. A love story in the trailer park. Why don’t they just get a place together. Dang crybabies.

Do you see how a warm and fuzzy feeling comes to the people of the Destin Campground when “eminent domain” came into play? Do you see just what the City Council wants to do to all those along Legion Drive, across from the campground? Do you know why? Because THEY made greed their leader and followed the Yellow Brick Road to progress. What? You don’t think uprooting the people of Destin to try and clean up the mess the council made is progress?
Do you not have more traffic, more noise, more trash, no signs of the beach anymore, more towering condos and higher taxes? Just because the people of Destin have to pay for all this with their homes doesn’t mean it isn’t progress. Way to go council. By the way, anyone one from the council or staff affected by this? I didn’t think so! People better stand up now. It could be your home next — all in the name of progress.

Jellyfish invade Destin — By: slacker
Maybe this will mean less vehicles with Louisiana plates out there on the road. Those people can’t drive...

By: hobblyhoopla
Where do the writers find these people? “The pain of a jellyfish is much like the pain of being dumped,” added Shaw. “It takes about 30 minutes to get over.”

By: snoopygirl
Maybe this is a blessing in disguise, with all the recent drownings due to failure to abide by flag warnings. Perhaps these li’l fellows (jellyfish) are more intelligent than some of us humans are.

By: gunkaroni
If beachgoers won’t get out of the water with the threat of drowning, I doubt a little jellyfish sting is going to deter them either. I said we need to hire one lifeguard with a huge fin strapped to his back to snorkel up and down the beaches, cruising every hour when the flags are double red. That might keep some of them out of the water.

By: chewychitlins
It’s just Mother Nature folks, nothing to be alarmed at. Jellyfish live in the water. Tourists don’t. As of late, they should stay out of the water anyway. Oh by the way, I don’t like tourists. I was born here. It used to be a nicer place to live until ...

Awh, ze jellyfish fields ... Where’s SpongeBob when we need him?

By: gunitfoyd
I like to tell people it helps when you let someone urinate on the sting.

 By: militarydawg
Some people really crack me up. These are wild animals (I think a jelly is an animal, not sure though). They live in the water. You go in, you accept the risks. If I get stung by a jelly and someone offers to take a leak on my body, I think I’ll just put up with the pain/discomfort. You know someone would have a camera ready and capture that moment for all time. Heaven forbid you get stung on the face.

My son got a pretty nasty sting on Sunday and we mistreated it. Vinegar can make some worse.
1. scrape the affected area first to remove as many of the nematocysts as possible.
2. try a little vinegar, meat tenderizer (if nothing else urine — preferably male) on a small area. If it doesn’t cause it to sting more, apply to the whole area.
3. finally apply ice or heat for pain/swelling and take Tylenol/ibuprofen if necessary.
It seems the majority of jellyfish in the area lately are moon jellies and have little to no sting.

I thought it was ammonia, not vinegar. Just go buy some old-school Windex with ammonia to spray on it.

By: longtimefloridian
Where’s the jellyfish spray? I can’t find it anywhere and only have seen one bottle of it. A friend of mine has a business cleaning condos and some tourist left a bottle behind. Still no clue where to find it. Anybody know?

By: hotticket
I get mine at Publix. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it at Wal-Mart. Some of those beach stores like Alvin’s Island sell it too. Although, you don’t really need it. Like the article states, vinegar works to neutralize the sting or you can just use the ole’ rub sand on it trick and wait it out. Cortaid or any other anti-itch/anti-inflammatory works to help the itch and sting too.

Fortunately I have never had a sting from a jellyfish, and neither have my girls or family that have been here to visit me. I did happen upon a young man who was stung and helped as I could or knew how. But thank you all for the informative posts, I’m actually a lot better armed knowledge-wise if I do encounter one.

Offshore drilling sounds like a great solution.

By: mermaidem
“Locals being deterred from beach-going does not seem to be a problem though. They have the beach at their disposal year-round. But tourists can’t afford to not take the plunge.” No, we are deterred because we are no longer allowed to use the beach without some homeowner or beach service guy telling us to leave “their” beach.

Beach Restoration — By: sand lover
MSBU: Makes Sandy Beaches Ugly.

By: The Force
The whole process has been a snow job and an example of government at its worst.

By: enough already
Leave the drama behind and ask yourself one question. Why would the County Commissioners and TDC push forward a bad project? They live here too, they live with the consequences too. The TDC’s job is to draw tourists to our area, they know how important the sand quality is. I think it’s hilarious that people think they would ruin our beaches.
