Overheard on The Web

Here is what some people are saying online about stories in the Destin Log.

Destin boarding house crackdown — By: G-UNITFOYD — May 7
The council needs to stop the boarding houses on the beach (CONDOS). Leave the people who live here alone. What happened to people being able to provide shelter for their families inside their home?

By: Mortikhi — May 7
Either your property values drop due to multi-family boarding in single-family homes or it drops due to the house being foreclosed. At least with the former, the homeowner can stay solvent and monetarily contribute to the community.

By: Drake — May 7
Okaloosa County is greedy enough to sell us all out. They changed the ordinance letting this happen, and it slipped under the radar without a lot of folks knowing about it except the builders. That’s the reason they can tear down single family homes and build 20 condos pretty much anywhere they want.

Adopt a LAW countywide — By: Hasseldork — May 7
This law is a great idea — and, long overdue. There are some landlords that don’t care about the neighbors as long as they get the rent money. Some houses have over eight separate sub-renters. Each has a car and they park all over the yard and the street.

Little League dispute over equal play — May 6
Mr. Tingle and Mr. Wagner should both be commended for not "ignoring the elephant in the room." This topic of equal play for all little leaguers has needed to be addressed for several seasons and now it will be. Taking the funding away is a drastic suggestion. However, it started the dialog for parents, coaches and the board. Let’s play ball and work together to better our town sport.

RIP: George “Doodle” Harris — By: bayou boy — May 11
Entrepreneur supreme, Doodle did much for the area, his friends and associates. When he opened the surf shop and Kahuna Beach service in the ’60s, I worked for him. He gave us local kids jobs and hope. He was an icon. I’ve never met anyone like him since. I will truly miss him.

Evolutionists should welcome creation science. If evolution is science, there is nothing to be scared of, except a more scientific theory. Maybe they are scared of losing funding to a more logical view — or maybe being judged for everything they do by an Almighty Creator is scary. But if creation is proven wrong like the article says, let’s put the two side by side and compare. Right ... that would be too scary.

Fraser Sherman’s column — By: sonthu — May 8
Creation has never been proven wrong. That is just a mantra. Evolution is just as much a religion. We need, in this day and age, some real science, and evolution does not fit the term. If we take your position to the fullest extent, we must conclude your ideas are not the product of intelligent design. Your ideas are opinion not science!

By: Rocky — May 6
Sorry, the debate is settled. Creationists just can’t accept that their side lost. When science began, around 1500, everyone, including the first scientists, believed the Bible was historically accurate. By the late 1700s and early 1800s, enough data had been collected that it became obvious that the Bible is not accurate for historical observations.

Evolution vs. Creationism — By: MikeF — May 9
If there’s anything that gets tiresome about these discussions, it’s the inability — or perhaps complete refusal — of creation supporters to assimilate new information. In fact, that is one major distinction between the two sides. Science accepts and welcomes new information. Creation and evolution HAVE been “put side by side.” The results have been pointed out over and over again. But whenever a creationist point is refuted, creationists simply ignore the data, provide no rebuttal and repeat the same thing over and over. I might take you seriously if you would simply provide logical arguments to support your contention.

I would like to know how any of the 'Destin High School' detractors can possibly think that a commute in a bus from East Destin to FWB High School is 15 minutes? Try 30-40 minutes each way, and THAT'S IN A CAR with ZERO stops and no 'Spring Break' traffic! Now multiply by 2 or 4 depending upon a student's extracurricular activities and even you will get the picture.
