EDITORIAL: What do you wonder about in Destin?

We are a town on a tightrope.
Call it the dichotomy of Destin. On one hand we are a community that has a great love affair with its small fishing village history. On the other is a boom town with a seasonal economy, where condos rise from the sand and beckon to tourists worldwide.
We are a town that celebrates its past as it grapples with its future. We are a success story told by a citizenry that is as diverse as it is blessed.
Every year, The Log celebrates this diversity and bounty with its annual Progress Edition. In this special Independence Day edition, we reflect on the past, present and future of the area.
This year, we are profiling the Seven Ancient Wonders of Destin and the Seven Modern Wonders of Destin.
But we need your help to do it.
On the Ancient side, we want to know what defined Destin in the world that was. Maybe these are things that are long gone. But maybe they still exist much like the real Ancient Wonders’ Great Pyramids, which have stubbornly stood the test of time.
For the Modern side, give us a more recent development — no pun intended. Tell us what has transformed Destin into the tourist mecca it is today.
Whether it is a building, institution, landmark or someone larger than life, we want to know what you have marveled at in our little slice of paradise.
And while many of your choices will be fond memories, let’s face it: Not all wonders are wonderful. Some things, regardless of whether you loathe them or love them, make you pause and marvel at the makings of man. Or maybe it’s a natural wonder that keeps you in awe of the Almighty.
Either way, your choices can be as broad or narrow as you please, but be prepared to justify your answer with your memories and opinions.
Just log on to our Web site at thedestinlog.com and post your wonder at the bottom of this submission, or e-mail your list to williamh@link.freedom.com. You can also drop your list by our office at 1225 Airport Road. You can even give Editor William Hatfield a call at 850-654-8448.
Help us celebrate our progress with your feedback.
