EDITORIAL: Black comedy and an unanswered question
It is safe to put those Geiger counters away and pull out the metal detectors again, Destin.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection determined, among other things, that the black sand that is soiling parts of Crystal Beach is not radioactive. And even though it has been classified as heavy minerals, it's not magnetic either.
Jokes aside, we now know conclusively that this is a natural process and we know that it comes from the same place as our signature white sand. What seems missing from the countless reports and commentary on the topic from scientists is the answer to the simple question “Are restored beaches more likely to contain or display black sand?” Well?
