Ron Hart blogs on: Palin by Comparison
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- It was a big week for the Republicans. Sarah Palin, a great choice for VP, spoke with humor, insight and a down home appeal that wowed the party faithful.
Governor Palin is a stellar pick who will energize the GOP base (I know that she energized my base when I met her). This is clearly the case since the left is scrambling to tear her down.
To me, Sarah Palin resembles one of those naughty librarians in a Cinemax movie that I, of course, never watch. She is just one insignificant male prompting away from pulling her hair pin out, shaking her hair out and dancing her Dewey Decimal System dance.
My guess is, and it is only theory at this point, that guys will dig her. She combines substance and sex appeal. I have found that if one of these traits does not appeal to a man, the other one will. When you have both, as she does, it is a deadly combination.
Stars were scarce at the RNC; who would risk any future roles or gigs by attending a right-wing event? The Hollywood “elite”, who are the most liberal of all, take notice of those who attend the Republican National Convention and start their own black list---the same type of McCarthyism blacklists they railed against.
Risking their wrath by attending, I did talk to Jon Voight, who was omnipresent at the RNC. My guess is he was there to raise the stakes in his 20-year estrangement from his liberal daughter, Angelina Jolie. Touché, John! Your move, Angelina!
I am sure Angelina, who collects kids like many tourists collect spoons from various trips, chimed in to say that Sarah Palin could not be an attentive mother and be as busy as she is. You know, the kind of mother Angelina is. I never heard the media question her busy movie-making and star-being schedule, suggesting that it hurt her “We Are the World” collection of kids. Angelina espouses her rage against the machine, buy the world a Coke, Kumbaya message of “Make Love, Not War.
Which brings me to the big news of the convention: Sarah Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy. While McCain was comparing the Obama campaign to Britney Spears, the GOP was inviting comparisons of them to Jamie Lynn Spears.
Long a proponent of abstinence only and against explicit sex education programs, Sarah may need to rethink her position on that one. But I guess there is not a lot to do up in Alaska in winter.
Until the father of Palin’s 17 year-old daughter was named, the National Enquirer was doing research to see if John Edwards was in Alaska six months ago. The situation may be good news for the GOP, since it gives Sarah Palin a chance to combine her two most endearing traits. She can now initiate a shotgun wedding so her daughter will be married when the baby arrives in three months combining her beliefs in gun toting and pro-life/family.
The reason the FemiNazi left so dislikes Gov. Palin is that she is not a progressive woman in the manner they have decided is best. She is not angry or easily offended, and did not attend Wellesley. She does not see glass ceilings everywhere. Palin appeals to women in America because she is like them: hard-working, family-oriented and upbeat. She seems like them. She seems like someone you carpool with or would like to have over for dinner. She pulls her weight, asks for nothing, has strong beliefs, charm, and does not expect government to bail her out or fight her battles.
The real issue here is the one that Hillary Clinton framed in her campaign against Barack Obama. Whom do you trust when that “3 am call” comes to the White House? McCain might be best, because at his age he goes to bed at 9 pm and is probably up watching Matlock at 3 am. Obama could respond to the call but there might be a delay while he warms up his teleprompter and wakes up his speech writers.
For me, the choice of McCain or Obama has been pretty much summed up by my dyslexic view that I labeled: the evil of two lessers. The Palin pick tips that balance and gives smaller government states rights folks some hope that she might some day sell the corporate jet sitting in Washington, on eBay. Meg Whitman would like that.

| Biden is no Palin as Hart so masterfully points out. |

| Biden saw defeat and bailed early in the primaries, why did Obama pick a running mate that failed to believe in himself? Obama is demonstrating his weaknesses by picking even weaker and irrelevent subbordinates. Both Dem candidates are out of touch with the American people, truly elitist. |

| As always I simply adore your columns! Palin does stand firm in her beliefs but can hockey mom's with lipstick take no for an answer without it getting personal? Does this fly in Washington and fit with McCain's "reaching across the aisle" politics? And no comments in your article about Cindy? |

| Hart is in his element with his Palin column and he is RIGHT. We are dealing with a unique woman here who is honest and smart and beautiful. She is NOT an egotistical politician who is merely bursting with pride. She's the real deal and it's about time someone like this came along. Way to go, Ron and Sarah. |

| Amazingly Ron Harts self proclaimed libertarian label seems to be leaning strongly Republican. Sorry Ron, I like your writing style, but it seems the press is again missing their own bias.
Obama bashing is great sport and obviously the season is wide open. Yet when he picked an outstanding VP, nothing. When McCain picks an outstanding VP, WOW the press lights up! Maybe because she qualifies as a VPILF, and by your column I see you agree.
Also, a 3 am phone call will kill McCain, or already find him dead. I am certain the teleprompters and make up people will be ready regardless of the time or who is in office.
Oh, and I have to ask, did Angelina make you personally mad, or is she merely an easy target? |

| Great one by Hart. As usual he was irreverent, funny and showed intelligence providing a simple but truthful condensation of reality.
Her sensuality is apparent, it is substantive brain what she needs to show in this unfortunate short campaign for VP. |
