The less-than-perfect quest for Destin High
I have followed with interest the push being made for a high school in
Destin. I can understand why folks there would like to see a school in
their town.
Driving over a bridge to either Fort Walton Beach or Niceville seems
like a long way to go and I'm sure there is a lack of community spirit
when kids from the same town are split between schools.
Unfortunately, it's like so many other less-than-perfect-situations.
Fixing it requires money -- lots of it -- and not just up front.
Running a school is an expensive proposition and it's one that the
Legislature has never properly funded, under the best of conditions.
These, as we all know, are not the best of conditions.
So, to those Destin folks trying to make this happen, I applaud your effort and mourn its likely outcome.
Unless some developer steps forward and offers you a completed
building, suitable for this purpose, I don't think you are going to get
far. Even then, it would be an uphill climb.

| It is obvious you have not investigated this very much. You may have listened to Members of our school administration only. If you want to do a proper job look into how Walton County is building another High School? Look into the process of aquiring capital money not operating money to build a school in Floida. By the way my understanding is there is extra capital money our school district has not even persued? Why? Every other county school district has figured it out?
Look into redirecting the money sent to support Destin children at FWB High to a Destin High School.
Basically before you write in your column do your job and investigate what you are about to write. Do not just listen to one side. Kinda makes you look biased which is professed by you and your peers in your business as not being true? |
