The less-than-perfect quest for Destin High

I have followed with interest the push being made for a high school in Destin. I can understand why folks there would like to see a school in their town.

Driving over a bridge to either Fort Walton Beach or Niceville seems like a long way to go and I'm sure there is a lack of community spirit when kids from the same town are split between schools.

Unfortunately, it's like so many other less-than-perfect-situations. Fixing it requires money -- lots of it -- and not just up front. Running a school is an expensive proposition and it's one that the Legislature has never properly funded, under the best of conditions.

These, as we all know, are not the best of conditions.

So, to those Destin folks trying to make this happen, I applaud your effort and mourn its likely outcome.

Unless some developer steps forward and offers you a completed building, suitable for this purpose, I don't think you are going to get far. Even then, it would be an uphill climb.
