The Destin Snowbird Club is officially in “holiday mode” as 2013 draws to a close.  The Club has gotten a wonderful start to the season, bringing in 365 members so far this year.  The big influx will be after the holidays and after the big registration which will be held from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 6. More information will be given in next week’s edition of The Destin Log about registration.

Events this fall have been very well attended thus far. The Destin Snowbird float in the parade was mounted on a trailer borrowed from Destin Community Center and the snowbirds would like to thank the Center for making our float possible.  Volunteers handed out beads to the children (of all ages and sizes) along the parade route. Despite the rain and humidity, everyone had a wonderful time and spirits were high as people exchanged “Merry Christmas” greetings and good wishes to one another. The Snowbirds were very appreciative of the comments made to them as they passed out the necklaces.

“This is why we come here … everyone makes us feel so welcome and the children were so polite as they received the necklaces from us,” said Paul Hewitt, organizer of the float for the parade this year.

It was noted by the snowbirds that many community people commented about how happy they were to have the snowbirds in town and that contributes to the “small town, down home feeling” that we get as seasonal residents. So, thank you, Destin, for making us feel so welcome! Even our pets feel welcome as some canine snowbird dogs walked the parade route in seasonal costumes with their masters. A good time was had by all despite the rain.

The Boat Parade Party was held at Crab Island Cantina and Carlos, the manager, did a wonderful job of making the event a memorable one for the snowbirds who attended. For those attending the Boat Parade as a group, the buffet of food, the music for dancing, the decorated boats and fireworks all helped to make another memorable evening for snowbirds during this holiday season.  Thanks go to Don and Carol Cooksey for making all the arrangements for this event.

On behalf of President Olson and the other board members, the Destin Snowbird Club would like to extend holiday greetings to the community of Destin and the citizens of the Emerald Coast during this holiday season.

News Flash for all Canadians: The CSA (Canadian Snowbird Association) will conduct an information meeting at the Destin Community Center at 1 p.m. Jan. 16. All Canadian snowbirds, from Panama City to Pensacola, are invited to attend this free information meeting. CSA President Bob Slack will bring us up to date on their activities relating to health insurance, government relations with the U.S. and Canadian governments, money exchanging and all areas which make all Canadians vacation on the Emerald Coast much more enjoyable and worry free.
