In their first meet of the season, both the Destin girls and boys teams took first place honors in a cross country meet held Wednesday at St. Mary’s in Fort Walton Beach.

Destin competed against athletes from Walton County Middle School of DeFuniak Springs, St. Mary’s of Fort Walton Beach and Meigs of Shalimar.

“Our athletes’ commitment and dedication were obvious yesterday,” said Destin Coach Tina Barron. “Winning the first meet is an exciting start to the season, particularly given the strength, speed and potential of this year’s teams.”

Placing first overall was Destin’s Luke Bilger, who crossed the finish line at 12:02. On his heels was teammate Michael O’Leary at 12:03, who was second overall. Third in for Destin was Jake Purvis at 12:58, and Mason Brundidge came in fourth at 13:33.

The girls also demonstrated exceptional speed and skill during the meet.

Destin’s Sophie Kellogg placed first overall at 13:25, while Sara Crews took second at 13:44 and Abigail Kline third at 13:46. Emily Kellogg placed fifth at 13:53.

“We are extremely proud of our boys and girls, and look forward to seeing how they progress each week,” Barron said.

Up next for Destin is a cross country meet at 4 p.m. on Sept. 20 at home against the Davidson Panthers of Crestview and the Ruckel Rams of Niceville.
