Although fishing begins this Sunday, Oct. 1 for the Destin Fishing Rodeo, the Rodeo Run 5K will not hit the trail until next Sunday, Oct. 8.
“We’re looking forward to 200 runners,” said race director Kimmy Meyers.
The Rodeo Run is more than just a foot race, it’s a fundraiser, event and competition all in one.
As a fundraiser, the run benefits the Miss Destin Scholarship fund as well as local charities.
As for it being an event, runners will be able to walk right down to the Destin Seafood Festival, which will be stretched out along Destin harbor, or visit the Destin Fishing Rodeo on the docks behind AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar following the awards ceremony that is held upstairs at AJ’s.
“AJ’s is the best with the Seafood Festival down stairs,” Meyers said.
On the competition side, it’s still about the fun.
“About a quarter of the people are from out of town. And we get a lot of repeats,” she said, noting she’s been getting a lot of calls.
Entry fee is $25 and registration will be open on race day at 7 a.m. at Clement Taylor Park on Calhoun Avenue. The first 200 to register will receive a Rodeo Run T-shirt.
The race, which is flat, fast and simple, will start at Clement Taylor Park run down Calhoun to Cross Street to the bay and back to Clement Taylor Park. Walkers, children and wheelchair racers are welcomed.
All participants are invited to the after-party and award presentation upstairs at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar immediately following the race. In addition to food and beer, runners will be awarded for their efforts and will also be eligible for the raffling of prizes.
Registration is available online at active.com. For more information, call Meyers at 850-496-0590 or email email@example.com.
Early packet pickup will be at the Destin Community Center at 101 Stahlman Ave. on Oct. 5 from 4-6 p.m. and on Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
