Not only did they win, but they shut out their opponents.

Both the Destin Marlin boys and girls soccer teams posted victories on the soccer field Monday night in middle school action in Destin. The Destin boys won 1-0, while the girls thumped the Wildcats 6-0.

As for the boys, they took the field first.

“The key was the first 10 to 15 minutes. We had a chance to score and we didn’t. After that the game became very ugly on both sides,” said Destin Coach Carlos Gonclaves.

About midway through the second half, the Marlins made a shot at the goal but were called for off sides.

Then in the last couple minutes, Destin’s Michael O’Leary knocked a penalty kick high into the net for a 1-0 game.

“At the end we had a beautiful goal there from Michael,” Gonclaves said. “He’s been training very hard every day at this … so sometimes you have to win games like this.”

With the win, the boys moved to 4-0-2 on the season.

In the girl’s game, Destin dominated on the field taking several shots throughout the game and making six.

“We played really well in spurts,” said Destin Coach Demetris Stevens. “We haven’t had a lot of practice time because of the cold weather last week, so we showed a lot of rust.

“But we had a long break before the next game. Hopefully we can get back to firing on all cylinders,” he added.

Nevertheless, the Marlins took care of business on Monday.

Ten minutes into the game, Mariah Manthey kicked one in the net to put the Marlins on the board.

A minute later, Ashlyn Fernandez dribbled one down and then kicked it in to give Destin a 2-0 mark.

Fernandez scored again with less than a minute to go in the first half to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead at the half.

About midway of the second half, Manthey booted in her second goal. Then five minutes later Selena Gallardo kicked one in right up the middle for a 5-0 game.

In the last five minutes, Fernandez kicked in one last goal on a long boot to put the Marlins up 6-0.

“The whole group has been doing really well and jelling as a team,” Stevens said.

With the win, the Lady Marlins move to 4-0-1 on the season with the next game not until after the first of the year.
