There was no stopping the Destin Marlin girl’s soccer team Monday night.
With 8:30 still left on the clock, the Destin Marlins shut out the Liza Jackson Lions 8-0 in a semifinal game in the Okaloosa County Middle School Girls Soccer Tournament Monday in Destin.
The undefeated Marlins will advance to the championship game at 5 p.m. Wednesday at home against the Pryor Pirates. Pryor defeated the Ruckel Rams 1-0 in another semifinal game Monday night.
As for the Marlins, they dominated on the pitch.
“I thought they were a little bit tight in the first half,” said Destin Coach Demetrius Stevens. “But after halftime, they just realized it was just another game. We ended up going and playing our team soccer like we have all season.
“It was an awesome team game,” Stevens added.
The Marlins didn’t waste any time getting on the board Monday night against Liza Jackson with Mariah Manthey finding the back of the net in the first minute of play. About 8 minutes later, Destin’s Ashlyn Fernandez booted one in the net from about 10-yards out for a 2-0 start.
A minute later, Manthey kicked in her second goal of the night from about 5-yards out, right in the middle of the net.
In the last 10 minutes of the first half, Destin scored again on a kick from Makenzi Maltezo for a 4-0 lead at the half.
After the break, Destin didn’t let up. Fernandez found the back of the net just three minutes into the half.
About four minutes later, Natalie Denton scored for a 6-0 game.
With 18:30 left on the clock, Destin’s Ally Dowdy found an opening on the left side and kicked one in the net.
Manthey, who started the scoring, finished up the game with a boot right up the middle for an 8-0 victory. The game was called due to the 8-0 shutout.
“Mariah Manthey had a really good game again,” Stevens said. “Makenzie Maltezo played really well on the wing coming back after being sick.
“The whole team did well … I could just go on,” he added.
As for advice Stevens has for his players about Wednesday’s championship game: “Just relax, go out and execute and have fun.”
