After coming away with a tie at an earlier meeting, the Destin Marlins left no doubt who the winners were on Monday as they put the Walton Warriors away 12-3.

“We just hit the ball today,” said Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon.

Again the Destin Marlins were led by eighth grader Samantha Sherer, who turned in a three-for-three performance with a double and two singles for three RBIs. Grayson King and Olivia Payne each doubled, while M.J. Toth and Elaina Perkins each singled.

“The biggest difference today was when we got the ball in the field we didn’t make the errors,” Cahoon said. “We made the plays … and we started from inning number one and decided to play all seven.”

Walton took the early lead scoring three runs in the third inning on three hits.

Destin answered with two in the bottom half. Sherer singled and scored on a ground out by Ava Smith. Kaylin Winter walked and scored on a single from Toth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Destin Marlins edged ahead with three runs. Payne led with a double and scored on a ground out from Allison McCraw. King walked and Sherer singled her in. Sherer eventually scored on an error for a 5-3 advantage.

In the fifth inning, the Marlins exploded for seven runs. King and Sherer each hit doubles for two RBIs each, and Perkins singled for an RBI.

Destin shut the Warriors down the last couple of innings for a 12-3 victory.

Sixth grader Ava Smith went the distance in the pitching circle for the Marlins. Smith struck out 10 and walked four.

“Ava did a great job,” Cahoon said.

Up next for Destin is a 4:30 p.m. game at home Wednesday against the Ruckel Rams.
