Brian Bird landed an 81.5-pound cobia in early April to take Big Fish Overall in the Destin Cobia Tournament at HarborWalk Marina.
Bird was fishing aboard the Bow’d Up with Capt. Brady Bowman when he landed the huge lemon fish.
Placing second overall was the Full Pull with Capt. Chris Wagner and Capt. Andy Block. Finland angler Harri Hotti pulled in a 72.6 pound cobia on March 5 to kick off the tournament.
As tradition has it, the Destin Cobia Tournament begins each year when a registered tournament boat brings in a cobia caught off the beach. The crew aboard the Full Pull has done this more than a dozen times in the last 20 years.
Placing third overall in the tournament was angler Andrew Johnson fishing aboard the Surreel.
In the 30-feet and under boat division, Nicky Harvell aboard the Fish Whistle took first, while Jacob Seaton aboard the Alcyone took second.
In the Ladies Division, Katie Schmidt aboard the Lucky Dog took first, while Whitney Brooks aboard the Patsy B came in second.
Capt. Cody Gray and crew aboard the Lucky Dog won the Top 5 Aggregate as well as the most cobia caught over 50 pounds.
Instigator won the Tag and Release division.
