The Destin All-Stars battled but came up short 17-13 to DeFuniak Springs in the Florida District 1 7-9 year old Machine Pitch Softball Tournament played in Shalimar.

“The girls did great,” said Destin Manager Brandon Patzig.

“We gave up too many runs early in the game but made the strongest charge back in the end, just fell short,” he said.

Nevertheless Patzig said, “I’m so extremely proud of them.”

DeFuniak Springs scored first. With two outs, Arionnah Padgett belted a double to left center and scored on a single from Makhaila Lee.

Destin got a couple of runners on in the bottom half but failed to score.

In the top of the second, DeFuniak Springs put three runs on the board. Naveah Messer singled and moved around on a shot from Abigail Hogg. Brianna Laird singled to left to score two runs. Laird slipped in shot home on a ground out to second baseman Lucy Hall.

The Destin All-Stars finally got on the board in the bottom of the second. Shay Kitchens singled and moved around the bases on errors. Kira Shock reached on an error and Kitchens scored for a 4-1 game.

In the top the third, DeFuniak scored four runs on four hits. Padgett, Lee, Onna Frazier and Messer all hit singles. Destin’s Elena Martin at third base made a couple of big plays for two put outs and Kitchens at short stop got the other out with a throw to first.

Destin rallied the bats in the bottom of the third scoring the five-run limit on five hits. Casey Cleutat led with a singled up the middle and Anna Beyhl followed with a bunt single. Cleutat scored on a fielding error. Kendra Ayers reached on an error and Beyhl slipped in home. The next batter grounded out. Up next Lane Fortenberry singled to left for an RBI and Hayley Mikel followed with a single deep to left. Martin clobbered a double up the middle for two RBIs and an 8-6 game.

DeFuniak answered with five runs in the top of the fourth on four hits. Madeline Farrell, Adena McCall, Padgett and Lee each singled.

The Destin All-Stars got two of the runs backing the bottom half. Shelby Plasier singled and scored. Kitchens singled up the middle but got pegged at third base. Shock singled and scored on a hit from Lynlee Armacost. Destin trailed 13-8.

In the top of the fifth, Destin held DeFuniak to one run. Hall fielded a grounder to get the first batter. Frazier singled up the middle and scored on a hit from Messer. Messer was put out at second on a throw from Martin to Hall at second. The next two batters reached on fielder’s choice hits, but Lane Fortenberry got the next batter on a ground out.

Destin closed the gap with three runs in the bottom half. With one out, Ayers reached on an error and stole second. Tatum Kirk singled to move Ayers around. Up next, Fortenberry slapped a double to left center for two RBIs. Mikel grounded out but Fortenberry scored for a 14-11 game going into the last inning.

In the top of the sixth, DeFuniak scored three runs on three hits. McCall and Paisley Biernacki each hit a single, and Alayah Dalton clobbered a double to right for two RBIs. Destin’s Martin made a couple of plays for outs and Kitchens fielded a grounder at short stop for the final out.

In the bottom half, Destin gave it one last shot. Plasier led with a singled and stole second. The next batter grounded out. Shock singled for an RBI and Hall ripped a double. Armacost grounded out but Shock scored. The next batter hit a line drive at the pitcher for the last out.
