The Destin All-Stars pounded out 20 hits to blast DeFuniak Springs 23-10 in the Florida District 1 Little League 8-10 year old Baseball Tournament championship game Saturday night in DeFuniak Springs.
With the win the Destin All-Stars will represent District 1 in the Sectional Tournament scheduled for July 7-8. The tournament will be played either in DeFuniak Springs or Destin.
In Saturday’s District 1 title game, the Destin bats were led by Palmer Robbins and Brody Ray, each with four hits and three RBIs. Mason George connected for three hits.
Manning the mound was Jace Cunningham, who pitched the first three innings for the Destin All-Stars and struck out six, while Vance Kirby finished up in the fourth with a strike out.
“We were not as sharp as we had been, but all of the work we have put in on our approach at the plate and our aggressive base running style took over,” said Destin Coach Justin Ray.
“I’m really proud of these boys," he added. "It takes a special group to achieve great things in All-Stars. It requires guys who are used to starting sometimes taking a seat and guys who are used to playing a certain position getting out of their comfort zone.”
Destin took an early 6-3 lead in the first inning.
In the top of the second, Destin added three more runs. DeFuniak closed the gap in the bottom half with four runs, but Destin still led 9-7.
In the top of the third, Destin picked up five runs and then held DeFuniak Springs to one in the bottom half.
Destin blew the game open in the top of the fourth with nine runs. DeFuniak scored only two in the bottom half with Destin getting a 10-run ruling on the game for the win.
“I have a lot of respect for these young men and the way that they have learned how to be unselfish teammates and work together,” Ray said.
