Destin Marlins split the waters with Liza Jackson
The Destin Marlins split with the Liza Jackson swimmers last week in their third meet of the year at the Fort Walton Beach YMCA.
The Marlin boys won 134-90, while the Destin girls lost 127-92.
Although the Destin girls lost, they put up a good fight against the Lions, setting four new school records. Several races came down to the final touches with less than one second between first and second place.
The Destin girls varsity 200 Medley relay team of Rachel Hidalgo, Jordan Pearson, Kalanne Krause and Rachel Gold started things off with a splash setting a new school record with the time of 2:12.75.
Sixth grader, Krause, missed capturing first place in the 200 freestyle by two tenths of a second, but still managed to set a new school record with the time of 2:07.58. She was seven tenths off first place in the 50 butterfly.
Gold set a new school record in the 100 freestyle with the time of 1:00.83, however even with a record-breaking time; she was out-touched by a Lady Lion with a time of 1:00.82. Gold won the 50 free, beating a Lion by less than one second.
In the girls last event, another record was set in the 200 freestyle relay with Pearson, Gold, Emma McMinnamin and Krause; 1:59.77.
Destin owned the girls and boys 25-yard events: Coral Mallette, sixth grade, took first place in the 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke. Ricky Gal, sixth grade, took first in the 25 freestyle and Jordan Brown won the 25 backstroke.
The Marlin boys racked up nine out of 11 first place finishes. The boys started off capturing first with the 200 medley relay team of Caden Ewing, Matt Wise, Logan LeBeau and Aden Mackenzie. The same relay team finished the meet with first place in the 200 freestyle relay.
Ewing competed in three events in a row, winning the 200 freestyle and the 50 backstroke. In a close 100 free race, the Marlins settled for second, third and fourth.
The 50-yard breaststroke and 100 individual medley is always a race for two Destin boys, Cooper Preston and Matt Wise. Wise won both events this meet with Preston less than a half a second behind. Mackenzie captured the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle with ease. Coach Dana LeBeau said “Mackenzie has been out sick for over a month and yet he still comes off the block with a lot of power and determination to win.”
