Lady Panthers scratch Marlins
Not enough hits and too many errors were the downfall of the Destin Marlins Wednesday afternoon as they lost 6-2 in middle school softball action to the visiting Davidson Panthers of Crestview.
Destin had only three hits and committed more than a half dozen errors.
Katrina Lathi had two hits for the Marlins, and Rachel Dehlinger smacked a double in the sixth inning to knock in Destin’s two runs.
Davidson, on the other hand, connected for five hits and took advantage of the Destin errors.
In the first inning, Destin shut the Panthers down on a pop up to catcher Minie Corcoran. Dehlinger struck out the next two batters.
In the top of the second, Davidson’s Kaylen Davis walked and stole second. Sarah White reached on an error and Davis later scored for a 1-0 lead.
Destin held Davidson in the third with a groundout to second baseman Emily Troell, a strike out and a pop up to Lathi at first base.
In the bottom half, the Marlins got a runner on base, but she was put out on a double play and Destin came up empty.
In the top of the fourth, the wheels fell off for Destin. Davidson scored four runs on two hits and three errors.
In the next two innings, Destin held the Panthers in check allowing no runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Destin’s Jennifer Bazylak reached on an error and Troell got on base on a fielder’s choice. Up next, Dehlinger slapped a double that hit at the base of the fence to score Bazylak and Troell for a 5-2 game.
In the top of the seventh, Davidson scored one last run. Hannah Day singled up the middle, stole around to third and scored on a passed ball.
Destin didn’t get a runner on base in the bottom half.
For the game, Dehlinger went the distance in the circle. She struck out nine, walked four and gave up five hits.
The loss drops the Marlins to 3-3 on the season. Up next is a 3:30 p.m. game Monday at home against the Bruner Spartans.
