Bruner Spartans spank Destin in five

Josh Frye smacked two out of the park to lead the Bruner Spartans in a 15-5 win over the Destin Marlins Monday afternoon in middle school baseball at Destin.
The Spartans connected for 14 hits in the five-inning victory.
Austin Jackson doubled and hit two singles for Bruner, while Reese Drake clobbered a two-run homer that cleared the fence, running track and landed on the football field. Drake also hit a single. Meguel Paulino and Hunter Sullivan each had two hits for the Spartans.
Destin, however, only connected for four hits. Tyler Kinard and Harrison Freeman each doubled, and Al Alford and Trey Marshall singled.
Bruner got on the board early with five runs on four hits in the second inning. Frye slapped one over the left field fence for two RBIs. Sullivan singled in a run and the other two scored on Destin errors.
The Marlins got two runs back in the bottom half. Cody Moore and Josh Little each walked and scored on an error.
In the top of the third, Bruner added one run on a solo shot by Frye.
The fourth inning was the downfall of the Marlins. Bruner scored seven runs on six hits and a couple of Destin errors. Paulino doubled in a couple of runs and Troy DeGennaro singled in a run.
In the fifth, Bruner brought in two more runs on the home-run shot by Drake.
Down 15-2, Destin gave it one last attempt in the bottom of the fifth inning. Avery Hatchett walked and Al Alford singled. Michael Haynes reached on a fielders choice to load the bases. Marshall singled and Reece Trainor, pinch running for Hatchett, scored. Freeman doubled to right center two bring in the other two runs.
“We dug ourselves a hole early by not making plays,” said Destin Coach Scott Hemond. “And then they got the big hits with guys on.”
Destin finished up the season 5-4.
