Destin 11-12’s connect for win over Northwest Escambia

Down 3-0 after two innings, the Destin 11-12 All-Stars battled back for a 13-3 victory over Northwest Escambia Wednesday evening in the District 1 tournament in Shalimar.
“We finally hit the ball,” said Destin Coach Chris Anderson. “We had our heads down a little, but then we brought in Cody Moore (at pitcher), and he shut ‘em down.”
Destin connected for 10 hits total with Moore, Drew Colowich and Tiger Scheyd each with two hits.
“Our subs Jesse Madeya and Grey Carter both came in and got base hits that sparked the dugout,” Anderson said. Both checked into the game in the fourth triggering the eight-run inning.
Northwest Escambia stepped up to the plate first with Brandon Freeman slapping one over the left field fence to start the game. Destin got out of the inning with grounders fielded by pitcher Griff Anderson, second baseman Frazier Shoults and a catch by left fielder Rilee Wrobel.
In the bottom half, Destin’s Anderson singled up the middle but didn’t score.
In the top of the second, Escambia scored two more runs on a couple of hits, before Destin made a pitching change. With two outs, Moore took over on the mound and struck out the next batter. Escambia led 3-0.
Destin again struggled at the plate with Colowich getting the only hit.
However, the Destin defense shut Escambia down in the top of third — one, two, three. Shoults fielded a grounder for a putout, Moore struck out a batter and Reece Trainor at shortstop fielded a grounder for the third out.
Destin finally got on the board in the bottom half with Cody Kilpatrick leading with a single up the middle. Shoults walked and the next batter struck out. Anderson nailed a shot at the second baseman for an out but Kilpatrick scored. Up next, Moore ripped a single to right to score Shoults for a 3-2 game.
After walking the first batter in the top of the fourth, Moore struck out the next three to sit Northwest Escambia down.
In the bottom of the fourth, Destin exploded on the ball to score eight runs. Michael Fell walked then Madeya checked in and blasted a double to left field. The next batter popped up for an out, then Carter nailed a single up the middle for an RBI. Shoults followed with a single to right for an RBI. Scheyd got a base hit and Anderson walked. Moore hit a fielder’s choice and two runners slipped in home. Colowich drilled a double up the middle for two RBIs and later stole home for a 10-3 go ahead.
In the top of the fifth, Destin sat Escambia down quickly with two ground outs and a strikeout.
Destin came in and scored the three runs needed for a 10-run ruling on the game. Kilpatrick and Shoults drew back-to-back walks and Scheyd ripped a single up the middle for two RBIs. Moore belted a double over the left fielder’s head to score Scheyd for a 13-3 game.
For the game, Anderson faced 10 batters in the first two innings, gave up four hits, struck out one and walked one. Moore faced 12 batters, struck out six, walked two and gave up no hits.
Destin is now 2-1 in tournament play and scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Monday against the loser of the Tri-County vs. RLTurner game.
