Freeport Bulldogs bite Blue Devils for District 1 title

The Freeport Bulldogs finished district play Friday night with a 52-35 win over Holmes County to claim the District 1 title outright.

“This gives us something tangible to show for all the hard work,” said Freeport Coach Jim Anderson.

The Bulldogs 8-1 overall and 8-0 in the district have one last regular season game to play this Friday. Freeport will host the Rocky Bayou Christian Knights for homecoming at 7 p.m.

“They’re playing hard,” Anderson said about the Knights. “They don’t have many kids and they’re struggling.”

And Freeport struggled a bit themselves this past Friday when they played the Holmes County Blue Devils.

“We had a some difficulty stopping them” in the second half, Anderson said. “We’re just glad to get the win.”

For the game, Freeport’s Nathan Hendrickson, the area’s leading rusher, added to his total Friday night with 230 more yards and he scored three times.

Cody Binder, making up the other half of Freeport’s lethal rushing duo, registered 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Cole Weeks connected on 11 of 14 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Ellington and Justin Farmer both caught touchdown passes.

Farmer also made a 20-yard field goal and connected on all seven of his point-after tries.
