The District Dogs: Knock off Baker, Blue Devils next

No matter the outcome of this Friday’s game with the Holmes County Blue Devils, the Freeport Bulldogs are the champions of District 1-A

“We’re happy to get the district championship,” said Freeport Coach Jim Anderson. “It’s been a long time coming and a culmination of a lot of hard work of a lot of people through a lot of years.”

He said they’ve also had a lot of support from the school and community to get to the 7-1 overall, 7-0 district record.

This is the first district championship for a football team at Freeport.

Although the district title is in the bag, “We’re still playing hard,” Anderson said.

This Friday, the Bulldogs will take on the 2-6 Holmes County Blue Devils.

Anderson has great respect for the Blue Devils coach and their quarterback.

“Jomar Concepcion is a great player,” Anderson said.

This past Friday, the Bulldogs knocked off the Baker Gators 36-14.

Freeport scored all of their points in the first half while rolling up 406 yards in total offense.

Senior quarterback Cole Weeks led the Bulldogs, throwing three touchdown passes and running for another.

By the half, Weeks had thrown for 229 yards and run for another 71 yards.

Weeks connected with Justin Farmer on a 40-yard scoring pass with 6:01 left in the first period. Farmer added the extra point for the only score of the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Weeks scored on a quarterback sneak from a yard out with 10:47 left in the half. Next, he found Nick Ellington with a 36-yard scoring pass.

A Baker touchdown by Vada Moore from a yard out slowed the Bulldogs down, but only temporarily.

Cody Binder scored on a 10-yard run, then Weeks hit Nathan Hendrickson with a 41-yard strike with 1:48 left to close out the Bulldog scoring.

The Gators scored on a 4-yard run by Justyn Lewis-Washington with 10:15 left in the fourth quarter.
