Only one week remains in this snowbird season. The last meeting chaired by president Timi Millar will be held at 10 a.m. March 12 in the Community Center. Entertainment will be Joseph Coutain, a comedian, and the piper from the Destin branch of the American Legion will play bagpipe music. The farewell luncheon of the year for the Friendship Club will be held following the meeting at 790 On The Gulf.

Last Tuesday's meeting began with the final performance of the year for the Snowbird Chorus. This group has enjoyed weekly practices under the direction of Marge Marcella. Coconut Radio, a duo new to the Destin Snowbird Club, provided the entertainment. Following opening remarks by President Timi, Mike Krueger, chairman of the annual Charity Golf Tournament welcomed Jean Grieve, Erin Bauer and Michelle Wright from the local branch of the American Cancer Society.

The generosity of the snowbird membership collections at last week's meeting, along with a portion of golf fees from the 56 golfers who participated in the playday, brought the total donation to $2,000. Jean Grieve shared with the audience how this money will be used in the local community. Jean, who is chair of the Destin Relay for Life, mentioned that the Okaloosa Branch raised the highest dollar amount per capita of any branch of the society in the United States for the Relay for Life project at last year's relay. This year's event will be held May 10-11 at the Morgan Sports Center.

Past-president Ken Yee took the stage to oversee the nominations and elections for the new board of directors. The following will be installed at next week's meeting: George Olsen, president; John Testa, 1st vice-president; Tom Franklin, 2nd vice-president; Ken Lemire, treasurer; Sigrid Aeschleman, publicity director; Gene Holzer, webmaster; Sandy Holzer, member-at-large; and Jay Pinder, member-at-large. The position of secretary will remain vacant until a volunteer comes forward to fill this position. Thank you to all who have stepped forward to join the board for next season.

Many Destin Snowbirds are soon northward bound. As you pack up, remember that any unopened non-perishable food is welcomed by the Community Center for the local food bank. Thank you to all who have already returned their plastic membership badge holders. The storage locker will be open each and every Saturday morning from 8-9 a.m. until March 23.
