The Destin Marlins got back on the winning track Wednesday with a 9-0 shutout of the visiting Shoal River Mustangs of Crestview in middle school softball action.
"We're still struggling at the plate," said Destin Coach Warren Whitaker.
The Lady Marlins connected for only four hits. Sam Houston was credited with two while Nikki Cobble and Caroline Porter each had one.
Taking advantage of Mustang errors, the Marlins scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second. Destin chipped away scoring one in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
"They came close to scoring on us a couple of times," Whitaker said. But Destin pitcher Faith Ford got the Marlins out of the jam.
Ford went the distance in the pitching circle. The eighth grader struck out 12, walked one and gave up three hits.
"It wasn't pretty, but it's a win," Whitaker said.
Up next for the Marlins, 4-1, is a 4 p.m. game Monday at home against the Bruner Spartans.
