The day Lonelle Ordway turned down nearly a dozen mothers looking for a few diapers at Sharing and Caring, she realized there is an urgent need in the community.

Now, Ordway and Lynette Connelly are working with churches and nonprofits across Okaloosa and Walton counties to do something and they’re asking the community to help meet a need.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Ordway said. “I think this has been a need for a while, but people are just now starting to take notice. It’s a community need, so we as the community are taking responsibility to do something about it.”

The two women are organizing a one-day diaper drive dubbed “Little Blessings Sunday” on Nov. 17. The diapers will be distributed to the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, Sharing and Caring and Shelter House.

Volunteers will be on hand at Chick-Fil-a in Destin collecting diapers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, and at Niceville Public Library and Sharing & Caring FWB at 126 Beal Pkwy. at the same time.

In Shalimar, First Unite Methodist Church and First Baptist Church will be collecting diapers from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
