If you're planning to imbibe on a boat this spring break, why not let someone else do the navigating?

Jimmy Crawford, owner and operator of Destin Water Taxi, circles the harbor seven days a week, picking up visitors and locals alike on his Navy vessel.

Keeping close to the Destin harbor, Crawford tends to avoid the crowds that the season brings in.

"I try to avoid Crab Island," he said. "There are too many rental pontoon boats and people who don't know what they're doing."

Destin Water Taxi operates from 11 a.m. to midnight on weeknights and until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. As a local for 35 years, Captain Crawford is a tour guide of sorts, directing his customers to all of the great shops and restaurants in Destin.

After a decade as general manager at Hog's Breath, Crawford knows what to expect in terms of spring break crowds. However, he said business primarily gets busy in the summer.

"It varies, I could pick up to 20 or 120 people in a day," he said.

If you're looking for a leisurely ride along the harbor, Crawford also offers hour-long boat cruises for $10 a person, free for children under 10.

Persons of legal age can also bring a cooler of beers along for the ride. It's cheaper than driving a boat and getting pulled over for a DUI, Crawford says.

"That's why I'm driving. $10 or $10,000; your choice."
