Six Freeport Bulldogs put points on the board in a 53-41 victory over the visiting Jay Royals Friday night.
"In our last three games, we've shot the ball better and have had better balance scoring," said Freeport Coach Mike Myrick.
Mary Kate Myrick led the Bulldogs with 17 points, including four 3-pointers, while Shadia Mitry checked in with 16 points. Katie Decker scored eight points, and Charity Head sank two 3-pointers for six points. Deanna Sadler and Stormi Hansley each scored three points.
In addition to spreading out the points, Coach Myrick said, "We've played better on defense and didn't have as many turnovers" on offense. "Overall I'm pleased with what they are doing."
The first quarter of play was even with each team scoring seven points.
In the second, the Bulldogs started to pull away with Mary Kate Myrick hitting three of her four 3-pointers to boost Freeport to a 25-19 lead at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs came on strong at the start of the third, scoring 12 unanswered points. Decker put up two quick baskets, then Myrick had a steal for a layup. Head finished up the run with back-to-back 3-pointers and a 37-19 lead.
Jay answered with four points from the foul line and a putback basket by Carissa Mulford. Freeport made a foul shot and Jay's Hillary Hendricks two, before Myrick drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 41-27 game.
In the fourth quarter, the scoring went back and forth with Freeport scoring 12 points to Jay's 14.
For the game, Freeport made six of 16 from the free-throw line, while Jay hit 16 of 24.
Top scorers for Jay were Hendricks with 21 points, and Mulford with 10.
Up next for the Freeport Bulldogs is a road game at 6 p.m. Thursday against Ponce de Leon.
