Matt Conway of Kansas City, Mo. tried his luck at Gulf fishing on Sunday and did quite well.

His first-trip ever on the Gulf of Mexico wasn’t on a charter boat or even a party boat from the Destin fishing fleet, but on a kayak he rented.

Conway said he had found a company online that rented out kayaks decked out for fishing. So he gave it a try on Sunday. Launching the kayak off the beach at Henderson Beach State Park he ventured off about a mile or so with a couple of spinning rods, a little squid for bait as well as a few artificials.

Conway, who kayak fishes back home on a lake, said he had hooked up with a couple of smaller silver-looking fish before he got the big bite.

Using the squid for bait, he latched onto a mahi mahi.

He said it pulled him around a bit before he got it onto the boat.

Not really knowing what he had, he headed back to the beach.

When he arrived, this reporter was quick to identify the fish for him as a mahi mahi, which is good to eat.

Although Sunday was his first time to fish on the Gulf, he said it wouldn’t be his last.
