A popular activity among many offered to the members of the Walton County Snowbirds is the book discussion group.
During the snowbird season in January and February, readers meet at Santa Rosa Community Church, 3524 U.S. Highway 98 in Santa Rosa Beach. Sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. with a book exchange which allows bibliophiles to share more than the book slated for discussion.
Sometimes it provides members with books they might have wanted to read but have not been able to access. Sometimes people are introduced to genres that become their favorites.
From 1:45 to 4 p.m., a volunteer leads discussion of the chosen book, posing questions that encourage participants to share their thoughts and insights.
It speaks to the longevity and anticipated continuation of this group that the upcoming season’s selections are voted on at the last meeting of each year.
For 2020, meeting dates and books chosen are:
Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020
“The Secrets of Mary Bowser” by Lois Leveen

“America’s First Daughter” by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie

All the above are available in paperback, audiobook, and ebook formats. Discussion group members have found previous seasons’ books on loan from local libraries. Nearby bookstores, both chain and independent, are happy to help snowbird customers.
Selections might be found at area resale shops like Goodwill or Haven House. Furthermore, purchasing books from charity thrift shops such as the two mentioned supports the Walton County Snowbirds’ goal of giving back to the community.
Of course, in order to join in on the exchange of books and thoughts regarding them, you must first join the larger organization.
Registrations are held at Faith Assembly Church Hall, 306 South Geronimo Street, Miramar Beach, and at Destin United Methodist Church, 200 Beach Drive, Destin. Registrations at Destin United Methodist occur before general meetings.
You can become a Walton County Snowbirds’ member for $10 cash or check drawn on a United States’ bank.
