The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) has teamed up with Whole Foods Market Destin to present the Save Our Bay Oyster Roast from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The community is invited to visit the food market, sample roasted oysters and learn about how oysters help improve the health of local waterways like the Choctawhatchee Bay.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our oyster shell recycling program and how important oysters are to our bay,” said Allison McDowell, CBA’s director. “These oyster reefs provide habitat for fish and crabs.”

The recycling program has partnered with area restaurants with the goal of collecting oyster shells and using them to construct oyster reef habitat.

“Adult oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day,” McDowell said. “The public will learn what makes our bay so enjoyable for fishing and recreational use.”

The free event will be full of kid activities and educational booths. Oysters will be available for $1 and $3 beers provided by Grayton Beer Company, with all proceeds benefiting the non-profit organization.

McDowell said the organization depends on donations and volunteers to increase their outreach within the community.

“We can’t take our waterways for granted,” she said. “We need people to join us in this mission.”
