DESTIN — A golf bag caught on fire and caused a deodorant can inside to explode Friday morning on Emerald Coast Parkway at the entrance to Kelly Plantation in Destin.

Destin Fire Control District Battalion Chief Bronson Coleman said the golf bag, which was lying in the street unattended, contained golf balls, golf clubs, golf tees and an aerosol deodorant can. The golf bag somehow caught on fire and caused the deodorant can to explode.

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Nicole Wagner said the heat from the fire caused golf balls to fly out of the bag.

A Kelly Plantation Gold Club attendant extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher, and DFCD firemen hosed down the incinerated golf bag to prevent nearby landscaping from catching fire.

Coleman said the fire was “no big deal, a very small issue.” No one was injured in the explosion or fire, and officials do not suspect it was a bomb threat.
