In an Class 6A, Area 7 game at Hillcrest on Saturday, the Hillcrest High School girls basketball team defeated Paul W. Bryant, 58-45, powered by a 27-points and seven rebounds performance from Hillcrest’s Cierria Cunningham.
Hillcrest’s next-highest scorers were Antoria Childress with nine points and nine rebounds and Jada Richards with nine points and seven rebounds.
JaKina Hines led Bryant with 16 points.
Hillcrest (16-3, 2-0) will travel to Clinton, Miss., for its next game which will be on Monday at 4 p.m. against event Clinton High School in the East Central Community College Martin Luther King Tournament.
Bryant wins area game at Hillcrest
Jared Sherfield scored 12 points, made six assists and six steals in leading Paul W. Bryant to a 47-38 Class 6A, Area 7 win at Hillcrest.
Kailex Stephens had seven points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Dylan Robertson had 10 rebounds to go with six points for the Stampede.
JaLon Johnson was the game’s and Hillcrest’s high scorer with 14 points. Tab Beverley scored nine.
Bryant (17-4, 3-0) plays a rare Sunday game at 7:30 p.m. when it plays Midfield in Fairfield’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday tournament.
