Destin named No. 2 summer vacation spot in U.S. by travel company
It’s no secret that Northwest Florida tourism has been growing every year, and with that growth travel and vacation rental companies nationwide are taking note.
This week, popular vacation rental booking website Tripping.com named Destin the No. 2 most popular vacation destination in the United States in it’s Summer 2018 Vacation Report.
To generate the report Tripping.com analyzed searches for vacation rentals between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend to see what places were trending for vacationers in the United States this summer.
The site also compared last year’s booking trends to this year’s projected rentals and reported that this year’s tourism rates are on the rise for Destin.
“Though many popular Florida destinations are showing a decline in tourism due to the impact of Hurricane Irma, Destin is showing positive growth this summer with a 26-percent year-over-year increase in vacation rental bookings,” Tripping.com reported in a press release.
According to Tripping.com, Destin was beat out only by Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in the sites Top 25 Most Popular Destinations in the United States. Neighboring Northwest Florida cities Panama City Beach, Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach also made the list taking third, 16th and 25th respectively.
Destin also took the No. 2 spot in the Top 10 Most Popular Beaches on the site, again trumped by Myrtle Beach for first.
Hurricane Irma had a dramatic impact on Florida tourism last year, according to the report.
Florida destinations hit hard by the hurricane saw their tourism traffic decline dramatically, Key West by 38 percent, Perdido Key by 32 percent and Marathon by 11 percent.
However, areas that were not impacted by the storm experienced growth, with Miramar Beach tourism up 42 percent last year, according to the report.
