The search is back on for a new Destin Library director after the new one resigned after four days.

On July 2, the Destin City Council confirmed the hiring of Robin Newell as the new library director. But later in that same meeting the board voted to give City Manager Carisse LeJeune two weeks to tender her resignation.

Four days later, Newell sent a letter of resignation to the city stating that she was "appalled at the lack of honesty, integrity and transparency by a majority of the council."

Newell said she cannot work for the city of Destin after what transpired during the July 2 meeting.

“The resignation letter provided by the new library director suggests that we have some problems," said Mayor Gary Jarvis. "Her objective view of what transpired at the July 2 council meeting tells me that there are some areas where we can improve.”

The city will reach out to the second finalist to see if they are still interested in the position. If that candidate decides to move forward, it will be brought to the next council meeting for a vote of approval.

The previous director, Jurate Burns, retired in May.

From a group of 20 candidates, seven finalists were selected and interviewed during May 21-25 and June 11-15.

The library director position is ultimately selected by the city manager and then confirmed by the City Council.

Kitti Capps, the library's circulation desk supervisor, is serving as the interim library director until a decision is made.
