Destin remains on the hunt for a new library director.
At the July 16 City Council meeting, Human Resources Manager Karen Jankowski recommended the board hire Wendy Livingston as the city's next library director. Livingston is a graduate of the Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute, has a master's degree in information science and learning technologies from the University of Missouri and is the senior librarian and branch manager of West Florida Public Library. She is also a member of the Florida Library Association and the Molino Mid-County Historical Association.
However, rather than approving Jankowski's employment, the council voted to delay any decision on hiring to their Aug. 6 meeting to give them more time to look at the remaining finalists, who are all from out of town.
Destin has been without a library director since May, when long-time Library Director Jurate Burns retired.
On July, 2, Emporia, Kansas, resident Robin Newell was selected by the Destin City Council as the city’s new library director. Although Newell initially accepted the position, she resigned before actually starting because she was “appalled at the lack of honesty, integrity and transparency by a majority of the council" after they voted to force outgoing City Manager Carisse LeJune to resign.
“I think most people would think that the natural progression would be to just hire the second choice out of the top three but with this council, but with this council, I really don’t know how that will play out,” said Destin Mayor Gary Jarvis. “I’m not going to speak for them at this juncture.”
