A special rip current statement has been issued by the National Weather Service warning of dangerous conditions in the Gulf of Mexico for portions of the Emerald Coast.
The statement expires on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m., but with a possible tropical storm set to form in the Gulf, or at least an unsettled weather pattern, it’s likely more advisories will be on the way for later in the week.
The statement says that frequent life-threatening rip currents are expected along beaches from Alabama through Northwest Florida. "The surf is dangerous for all levels of swimmers," it said.
The target area for the statement was Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties.
