A surfer was bitten on the ankle by a shark and drove himself to the hospital Saturday afternoon, lifeguards said.
The 39-year-old Port Orange man was surfing near the Ponce Inlet Jetty shortly after 1:15 p.m. in New Smyrna Beach when he felt something chomp down on his ankle, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.
The man, whose name was not released, was not seriously injured and drove himself to the nearest hospital, lifeguards said.
Saturday's shark bite was at least the third reported this year along Volusia County beaches.
The previous shark bite was reported July 11 at the 27th Avenue beach approach in New Smyrna.
