Commons Drive in Destin may be the next location for Hilton's newest hotel experience — TRU.

City of Destin officials said they are reviewing a minor development order for a 117-room hotel at the southeast corner of Henderson Beach Drive and Commons Drive. TRU by Hilton, which is the proposed development, is an affordable Hilton hotel design founded in 2016 that targets a "young-at-heart" client base, according to its website.

The new hotel will “provide economic benefits to our community such as an increase in the tax base, additional bed tax revenue and new employment opportunities,” said Destin Mayor Gary Jarvis.

The brightly decorated hotels feature game rooms, 24/7 markets that includes single-serve beer and wine, and modern-style fitness centers. The lobbies also have 24/7 complimentary coffee and tea, and guests can use a mobile app to electronically unlock doors and check in and out of the hotels.

If approved by the city, the hotel will be built on approximately 2.55 acres. This hotel will join TRU's two others Florida locations in Tallahassee and Jacksonville.

The property was previously a used car dealership, according to the development order. The dealership building has been demolished and removed. The parking lot area, however, remains.

The development orders highlight plans for on-site stormwater management and a traffic impact analysis. The plans for the new hotel are currently being evaluated by the city's Technical Review team. Once that review is completed, the hotel will go before the City Council for approval, but no timeline was available for when that would happen, said Doug Rainer, the city's public information manager.

A new hotel means more traffic, and Jarvis said the city is working on improvements with the county that could lead to a traffic light being installed at the intersection of Commons Drive and Henderson Beach Drive.

The hotel, according to the application, is owned by a company out of Germantown, Tennessee.
