After running 3.1 miles in its first meet of the season at the University of West Florida, the Paxton School cross-country team spent the remainder of the day volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Pensacola. The athletes entertained children, cleaned the facilities and shared love with everyone there.

Participants included Brianna Wright, Holden Mitchell, Jacob Morgan, Caylor Dixon, Maddie Varnum, Philip Anderson, Landon Stanley, Zach Wilson, Emily Wilson, Ragan Butts, Gracie Geoghagan, Lyndsey Wright, Eugene Hall, Nick Johnson, Blaine Johnston, Lawson Geoghagan and Tristan Petty.

The Walton County Teacher of the Year, Joan Kennett of South Walton High School, recently ranked 30 out of 74 applicants as one of the best teachers in the state. The Florida Lead Teacher Network with the Florida Department of Education awarded the designations.

In SWHS Key Club news, more than 40 new members joined this year, well above the four members from a year ago.

The Kiwanis Club works alongside the Key Club in social outreach programs such as displaying the U.S. flag on Highway 331, participating in beach clean ups and organizing an ACT/SAT/AP book drive.

In musical arts, SWHS hosted a standing-room-only performance by 21-year-old Wang Yinuo. Walton School District Fine Arts Coordinator Keitha Bledsoe arranged for this award-winning pianist from Beijing to play for the Seahawks.

To better understand the properties of matter, Katie Adams’ West DeFuniak Elementary fourth-grade students created density towers in glass containers, showcasing five layers of different liquids.

They discovered that liquids do have different densities, which build a layering effect with the heaviest on the bottom.

Students dropped items into the density towers to compare the surrounding liquid, helping them see why some items float and others sink.
