Mikey Seevers has been behind the bar at Harbor Docks almost as long as they have been open. A local of Pensacola Beach, Seevers made the move to Destin 35 years ago and never looked back.
“I grew up on Pensacola Beach. and a friend of mine was a DJ out there,” he said. “One night, a limousine pulled up and five girls got out of it. One happened to be the manager of Night Town. She convinced my friend to come to Destin to DJ, but he said he would only do it on one condition. ‘I’m not going unless Mikey does, too,’ he told her, so that’s how I moved to Destin in 1983.”
Seevers said he started bartending by accident one night while he was manning the door for a concert at Harbor Docks.
“I was taking money, and the manager came running out,” he said. “’Do you know how to bartend?’ he asked me. ‘Yeah, kind of,’ I said, and that’s how it all started.”
Mikey’s name is now synonymous with Harbor Docks. He even has a drink named after him, the Mike-A-Rita.
“Going to other bars and drinking their margaritas, no one had one I liked, so I played around with it until I liked it,” Seevers said of the creation of his signature drink. “It’s basically a top-shelf margarita or a Texas margarita.”
Seevers said he likes to use Cuervo Gold Tequila, Grand Marnier, orange juice and Sprite in his concoction but, he added, he does have a secret ingredient.
“The love – you put the love in it,” he said.
When it comes to the job, Seevers said his regular customers and his friendship with the local family who owns Harbor Docks make his years fly by.
“The people that I work for are great. The Morgan family have been good to me over the years, and the view of the office isn’t bad,” he said. “But most of all, there’s two customers, their banter every day at the bar has kept me intrigued through the years.”
Seevers explained he specifically liked to watch the two discuss topics, argue about issues, then ultimately become friends over and over again.
“You knew if it was a bad issue because they would sit at opposite ends of the bar for a few days until they made up,” he said. “Those are some of the reasons I’ve stayed.”
Seevers said he has two favorite hobbies and one best friend.
“I’m a surfer and a fisherman,” he said. “I have a little Jon boat called Stinkbutt and I like to go out bay fishing. I also love my blue pit bull, Lily. She’s just as sweet as she can be.”
