EDITOR'S NOTE: For November, we will visit local coffee shops to feature unique coffee drinks for Signature Sip.
With a name like Destin, it’s almost second nature to find Grant Destin down on the Destin Harbor, but instead of working in his family’s restaurant Dewey Destin’s Harborside, you’ll find him inside his new coffee food truck, Jumpin’ Goat.
Destin, his wife, MacKenzie, and his best friend, Hayden Shaw opened the coffee cart in May and have quickly become a morning staple along the harbor.
"My family owns Dewey’s and her family owns Jumpin’ Goat in Georgia, so it was a cool way to put our two family businesses together,” Destin said of the coffee cart.
Destin explained his in-laws run a coffee roastery in Cleveland, Georgia, so they are able to get freshly roasted coffee every week for their coffee cart.
“It’s shipped straight from Ethiopia, Guatemala, or wherever it’s sourced, roasted in Cleveland, Georgia, and shipped straight to us, so it can’t get much fresher than that,” he said. “Once I had (Jumpin’ Goat) coffee it’s 100 percent better than anything I’ve ever tasted.”
For his signature sip, Destin chose to feature the cart’s most popular drink on the menu, the Vietnamese Cold Brew. Destin said following the authentic Vietnamese recipe, the drink is a simple mixture of cold brew and sweetened condensed milk, but the magic of their drink is in the process.
“We take single-origin Ethiopian coffee beans, coarse grind them and brew them for 24 hours,” he said. “Using a really freshly roasted coffee makes a big difference in cold brew. A lot of people will oversaturate their cold brew with water, so ours has a true potency to it because we use equal parts water to sweetened condensed milk.”
Although his love for coffee didn’t grow until he was halfway through college, Destin said once he tried it, he was hooked.
“Working in the restaurant industry, you drink a lot of coffee trying to wake up,” he said. “Now I feel like coffee is my hobby.”
Besides the cold brew, Jumpin’ Goat offers espresso, hot brew, smoothies, homemade ice cream sandwiches, baked goods and more.
“Our German chocolate cake is pretty popular. It has a German chocolate-flavored roasted coffee, coconut creamer and salted caramel syrup,” Destin said. “We also have seasonal flavors, such as pumpkin spice and Southern pecan.”
When he’s not serving coffee, Destin said he and his wife enjoy spending time with their two dogs.
“We have a black Lab and a white shepherd mix, and they’re like our children,” he said. “They go everywhere with us.”
