DESTIN — Payless ShoeSource is set to close this month.

The popular chain shoe store, located east of Walmart at 16055 Emerald Coast Parkway, is the last Payless in Destin.

A large sign reading "store closing sale" could be seen Wednesday from U.S. Highway 98. The store was selling all merchandise at 60 percent off.

Payless staff confirmed over the phone Tuesday the store will close Dec. 24.

Kelley Hudson, who shopped at Payless on Wednesday, said she was very sad to see the Destin store go. Hudson said she first tried to shop at the Mary Esther location Wednesday, but a sign outside of the business said it was closed for repairs.

"You just can't beat the price and variety," Hudson said. "I've been shopping at Payless for decades. I buy a lot of shoes. I probably have 60 or 70 pairs, and almost all of them are from Payless."

The Daily News contacted the Payless ShoeSource corporate office, but staff said they could not confirm the store was closing. As for the Mary Esther location, they said it is no longer in their system of open stores.

However, the local Payless staff said the Mary Esther store will reopen at the end of December.

Payless ShoeSource filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017 and announced the closure of about 800 stores nationwide. One of those stores was in Miramar Beach.

The only other Payless ShoeSource in the area is on Ferdon Boulevard in Crestview.
