Science and holidays combine at West DeFuniak Elementary School in Amanda McKee’s kindergarten class.
The students used Santa’s Christmas cookies to determine which would float the longest in milk. They tested sugar, gingerbread and marshmallow cookies.
“We discovered that marshmallow cookies float the longest because of their chocolate coating that keeps the cookie from absorbing the milk,” McKee said.
In November, Marie Hurley’s kindergarten class used Thanksgiving history as part of a math lesson. Her students studied about Native American Squanto, who assisted the Pilgrims when they first arrived in North America.
The students used graphic organizers to write and draw about the ways that Squanto helped the colonists find food for their first winter.
Fort Walton Beach Mayor Dick Rynearson presented the city’s ACE awards to FWBHS student Lauren Tasillo and to CHS student Chai Mauliola during the early December city council meeting.
“Every month, the city honors a student from Choctawhatchee High School and a student from Fort Walton Beach High School with the Award for Civic Excellence,” said the city’s public relations manager, Doug Rainer.

Rocky Bayou Christian School fourth-grader Ayush Patel placed first in the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools State Spelling Bee in Inverness early in November. Ayush was one of nine RBCS students who participated in the competition.
