Destin Library Workshops/Presentations
The Destin Library schedule of workshops and presentations will be offered January through March. Individual workshops (Tuesday 2 p.m.) or presentations (Monday 10 a.m.) will be held in the David Neal Computer Lab or other locations within the library. Workshops are “hands-on” experiences. Presentations are “informational” only; however, hands-on opportunities to practice skills learned will be available after each session.
Offerings are open to individuals having a valid library card membership in the Okaloosa County Library Cooperative and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Happenings at Destin Library
The Friends Guild of the Destin Library will sponsor “Re-introducing Your Library” at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Library. This program is free and open to the public. Learn how libraries are evolving into much more than a place with lots of books and movies to check out. Megan Fontaine, a staff member of the Destin Library, will explain how to check out e-books from the library. Those attending are encouraged to bring their Kindle or other reading device so they can try it out. Fontaine will also briefly explain other new conveniences at the library and talk about new programs being offered to children, teens and the general public. Author at Library
Pensacola author Katherine Youngblood will join the Senior Book Club at the Destin Library for a book talk and discussion of her recent title "Cast Away Stones," at 10 a.m. Jan. 9. This program is free and open to the public. The book is a story about two young women from vastly different backgrounds who forge a loyal friendship until one discovers the other's hidden secret. The book is the first in a series.
MLK Oratorical and Poster Contests
Okaloosa County K-12 students are asked to participate in the MLK Oratorical and Poster Contests, sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration Committee, on Jan. 12 at the NWFSC Mattie Kelly Arts Center. The first place winners in each category will receive a trophy and a monetary award. The first place oratorical winners will present their speeches at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Program on Jan. 20. The first place poster winners will have their work on display at the program as well. A workshop to assist students in Okaloosa County high schools who will take the Feb. 9 ACT and March 9 SAT will be held from 2-5 p.m. Feb. 4-5 and 11-12 in the Media Center at Fort Walton Beach High School and 2-5 p.m. Feb. 6-7 and 13-14 in the Media Center at Niceville High School. Winter Guest Fest
The 14th Winter Guest Fest, formerly known as the Snowbirds Festival, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 17 at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island. is attended by about 1,200 snowbirds each season. Admission is $2. Winter guests will be reintroduced to their favorite businesses, along with a few new vendors, in the categories of dining, resorts, shopping, hotels, entertainment and more. AARP Tax Assistance

Garden Club: The Green Thumb Garden Club will meet at 9:45 a.m. Jan. 23 at the Linkside Bayside Ballroom in Sandestin. A free afternoon presentation, “Civil Rights — How Far Have We Come,” will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 12 at the library. The program will focus on life in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963 at the time of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing which inspired the electrifying speech by attorney Charles Morgan Jr.
Spring Craft Show
The City of Destin’s 13th Annual Spring Craft Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Community Center. There will be more than 70 vendors showing handcrafted jewelry, woodcarvings, paintings, food items and more. Vendor booths are available for $45/residents and $55/non-residents. Space is limited so vendors need to register early. Admission is free to the public.
Seniors of Destin
