DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — A mother was arrested Wednesday after four children were left alone for four days without enough food.

DeFuniak Springs Police responded to a residence late Wednesday morning in reference to the children, according to a press release from the City of DeFuniak Springs. Officers and detectives found a 16-year-old taking care of two 11-year-olds and a 5-year-old while the mother reportedly was visiting her boyfriend in Niceville.

The mother returned to the residence while officers and Walton County Sheriff's Office Child Protection Unit personnel were still on scene.

Cassandra Goldsmith, 36, admitted leaving her children at the residence without adequate food, the release said. Goldsmith was arrested and booked into the Walton County Jail on charges of child neglect.
